Finance Desk – In Ghaziabad, a couple lost more than Rs 3 crore to a cyber scam. They were tricked by a fake investment opportunity they found on Facebook.
Nabanita Mishra clicked on an advertisement on Facebook that led her to a WhatsApp group. This group claimed to be part of a well-known investment platform. The group leader, named Rajat Chopra, promised big returns from a competition.
Nabanita paid a monthly fee of Rs 2,000 for investment advice. She and her husband made 22 different payments to various bank accounts, thinking they were investing in shares and IPOs (Initial Public Offerings).
The group claimed to loan Nabanita Rs 80 lakh for an IPO investment. When she wanted to check her investments, she was told she needed to pay back the loan first.
After paying more money for taxes to access her profits, Nabanita became suspicious. She couldn’t find the investment details on other platforms. When she tried to contact the company and other group members, their numbers were unreachable.
Nabanita filed a police report when she realized she had been scammed. This story shows how important it is to be careful with online investments.
