On Thursday, the Indian stock benchmark indices ended lower after a volatile session. BSE’s Sensex closed 242.37 points or 0.76 percent lower at 31,443.38 and Nifty closed 71.85 points or 0.78 down at 9,199.05.
Bharti Infratel was the biggest gainer for the day among Nifty stocks, up by 7.1 percent. On the other hand, NTPC, Kotak Mahindra Bank and ONGC were among the losers that dragged the indices lower.
NTPC closed 4.3 percent lower and Kotak Mahindra Bank fell as much as 4.5 percent during trade after it announced that it has decided to make 10 percent reduction in salaries of employees earning a CTC of Rs 25 lakh per annum or more.
Among sectors, Nifty FMCG index fell 1.4 percent, the top sectoral laggard on Thursday, followed by Nifty Bank that ended 1 percent lower.
