New Delhi: Fugitive diamond merchant Mehul Choksi, who fled the country with thousands of crores of rupees from Indian banks, has claimed in an affidavit that he is a law-abiding citizen and had left India only for treatment in the US. Mehul Choksi has invited Indian officials for his interrogation. He said that he can ask whatever questions the Indian authorities want to ask about the investigation being conducted against him.
According to the report of an English newspaper, the absconding businessman has filed an eight-page affidavit in the Dominica High Court saying that I have asked the Indian authorities to interview me and ask any questions regarding any investigation. Regarding leaving the country, Mehul Choksi said that I never ran away from Indian agencies. When I left the country to get treatment in America, there was no warrant against me.
The diamond trader, wanted in the Rs 13,500-crore fraud case in Punjab National Bank (PNB), is currently in the custody of the Dominica police and the Dominican magistrate’s court has refused to grant him bail. Choksi was arrested on May 23 for illegally entering the Caribbean island nation.
