Washington: The occupation of ‘Indians’ at the top posts of the world’s big companies is increasing. The latest name in this connection is that of Sonia Syngal, who has been appointed as CEO of Gap Inc., the largest apparel retailer in the US. It is a big thing to place a woman of Indian origin in the corporate world dominated by white men.
The 49-year-old Syngal is the only Indian-American female CEO of a company included in the Fortune 500 list. Prior to this, Indra Nooyi’s name as CEO of PepsiCo was included in this list. She stepped down from the post in 2018.
Born in India, Sonia Syngal’s family had migrated to Canada and then to the US during her childhood days. Syngal received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from Kettering University in 1993 and a Master of Manufacturing Engineering degree from Standford University in 1995. They have two children aged 20 and 17.
