New Delhi: The Income Tax Department has again extended the last date for filing returns, giving relief to tax payers. The Income Tax Department has said that now common citizens can file their returns for the year 2019-20 by 31 December 2020. The last date for this was fixed on 30 November 2020.
According to the Finance Ministry, the deadline for filing the Income Tax Return (ITR) for the financial year 2019-20 for individual taxpayers has been extended by one month to December 31. The ministry said that for taxpayers whose accounts need to be audited, the deadline for filing ITR has been extended by two months to 31 January 2021.
The government had earlier in May also extended the deadline for filing ITR for FY 2019-20 from 31 July to 30 November, giving relief to taxpayers in compliance. The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) said in a statement, “For taxpayers for whom the deadline for filing income tax returns was 31 July 2020 before the extension, the deadline has been extended till 31 December 2020.”
