New Delhi: Indian users are using much more internet than before. The biggest reason behind this is the cheapness of data plans. At the same time, cheap and entry-level 4G smartphones have increasingly attracted users to online content. Users are spending more than 11GB of data every month on many apps and video streaming platforms. This data has been released by Nokia, the maker of telecom products. The company said in its Annual Mobile Broadband India Traffic Index (MBiT) report that overall data traffic and 4G usage increased by 47 percent in 2019.
The data spent by the users across the country is 96 percent 4G data. At the same time, 3G data traffic has seen a decline of 30 percent compared to before. Nokia India CMO Amit Marwah said, ‘Users on average monthly data usage were more than 11 GB in December, with up to 16 per cent growth. The reason for this is the upgrading on 4G networks, cheap data plans, affordable smartphones and the popularity of videos more than ever before.
Nokia India CMO said that data consumption in India is the highest worldwide and Indian users have overtaken markets like China, US, France, South Korea, Japan, Germany and Spain. With the help of one GB of data, users can usually stream 200 songs, or watch high-definition videos for an hour.
The special thing is that broadband is used 47 percent in India, which is much less than 95 percent in China and 95-115 percent in the rest of Europe. Marwah said that broadband usage in India can be increased by developing the necessary technology. The price of data in India is also the lowest worldwide at Rs 7 per 1 GB of data. There are about 598 million 4G data users in India, while the number of 3G users is up to 4.4 million. The use of video streaming over-the-top (OTT) platforms has also increased rapidly in India.
