Hyderabad: SLG Hospitals, in collaboration with FICCI, Hyderabad Chapter organised a webinar titled: ‘Mind v/s Machine: AI in Healthcare – Increasing Use of Technology in Medicine – Boon or Bane?’

The eminent panel comprised of senior Doctors and senior level Managers representing healthcare equipment and technology companies. It included DVS Somaraju – Executive Director, SLG Hospitals, Dr. V Jagan Mohan Reddy – Orthopaedic Surgeon, Dr.PradeepPanigrahi–GI & Laparoscopic Surgeon and Medical Director at SLG Hospitals, Karan Verma – Head, Healthcare Digital Solutions, Wipro GE Healthcareand MerveAygit – OIS Business Line Director, TIMEA, Elekta.

Artificial Intelligence is significantly impacting our society and changing the world we live in. The transformative impact of artificial intelligence on our Healthcare system is what the world needs to be discussing and preparing for. From diagnostic and imaging technologies to therapeutic applications and robotics, the potential for machine learning and AI technologies has penetrated into every aspect and corner of the medtech world.

With better monitoring and diagnostic capabilities, artificial intelligence can dramatically influence healthcare. By improving the operations of healthcare facilities and medical organisations, AI can reduce operating costs and save money.

The afternoon’s engaging discussionrevolved around the question whether sophisticated Artificial Intelligence-driven medical equipment can (ever) replacethe human mind and judgement of experienced doctors. And if there can be a trade-off between precision and empathy?

DVS Somaraju, spoke about the importance of investing in advanced robotic equipment and the overall impact on cost to the patient. He also threw light on the ongoingtraining for doctors to invest them with the capability to handle high precision robotic equipment.

Dr.Jagan Mohan Reddy, discussed how robotics is revolutionising orthopaedic surgery and helping in the delivery of more and more positive outcomes, especially in the case of joint replacement. But he cautioned that medical judgment based on personal experience and expertise cannot be overlooked at any point of time.

Replying to a question on the protocols and compliances in harnessing AI-based healthcare equipment, Dr.PradeepPanigrahi saidAI regulation is still in its nascent stages so far as healthcare is concerned. Regulating the usage of AI in healthcare is tricky and half-baked approaches can have serious repercussions. There is the need for more independent, non-partisan think tanks to come together and reframe the governance model to keep up with the rapid strides being made in digitalisation and automation of healthcare.

‘A healthier world with more precise and efficient care’. Karan Verma elaborated on this motto of GE Wipro Healthcare, as he spoke about the driving factors in the space of R&D and design of healthcare equipment. He also spoke about the advancements to be expectedin digitalisation of healthcare, a decade from now.

MerveAygit elaborated on Elekta’s stance on balancing personalized care and efficiency for better healthcare outcomes. She described the role of Elekta’sdiagnostic tools in complicated neuro surgeries, and spoke about new technologies that wield the power to change the world of complicated operations and surgeries.
