Telecom company Bharti Airtel and chip maker American company Qualcomm on Tuesday announced an agreement to speed up the availability of 5G in India. Airtel recently became the first telecom company in India to showcase the 5G network in a live commercial network in Hyderabad city, showcasing the company’s technical capabilities. According to the company’s statement, the company will use Qualcomm 5G RAN platforms to launch virtualized and open RAN based 5G networks of 5G RAN platforms through Airtel’s network vendors and device partners.

It further states that O-RAN’s flexible and large-scale architecture will provide new opportunities in providing 5G networks to small and mid-sized businesses. Open RAN or Open Radio Access is the terminology of the network architecture industry. The statement said that Airtel and Qualcomm Technologies would compromise for several things, including 5G fixed wireless access (FWA), which would deliver broadband connectivity to homes and businesses at gigabit speeds.

According to the statement, the agreement aims to provide affordable and fast broadband services across India, to address end-to-end connectivity challenges, which are becoming important in today’s remote, mobile first society.
